[brief plot synopsis]
Chris Finn (Desmond Harrington) is on his way to a job interview and is driving through the mountains of West Virginia. There is then a chemical spill on the road, so being short on time, he decides to take a different route, an abandoned dirt road in the middle of nowhere. He then by accident crashes into a car sitting in the middle of the road. He then meets a group of friends on a hiking trip who include Jessie (Eliza Dushku) whom where stranded on the road. Two people stay at the car, and another group goes for help, only to find a sinister cabin nesteled in the West Virgina woods, that is home to a trio of cannibalistic mountain men horribly disfigured from years of in-breeding. They then make a mad dash for their lives through out the woods, only hoping to make it out alive.

[good things]
Great oldschool horror style story, great killers, great characters. The story pretty much secludes the characters high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is pretty much the cliche' for any old school slasher film. The film had a nice heroine (Eliza Dushku) and co-hero (Desmond Harrington). The kills are very unique and pretty gruesome, even though CGI is used for some of them. Most of all, Stan Winston designed the creatures and pretty much hit the nail on the head with them.

[the bad]
Well, as I said CGI was used in some of the kills, I am not a fan of that. Some of the tree scenes were obvious CGI, and completely unrealistic. I would have liked to see more deaths and I also thought that giving the killers more of a backstory than an opening credits montage would have been a good idea.

[final thoughts]
When I first rented this I thought it was going to be another teen horror movie of the 2,000's era. After watching the first 10-15 minutes of it I was about to shut it off, but gave it a chance. Needless to say, I am thankful I did. The plot quickly picked up and delivered. I really don't see why so many people hate this movie, I personally loved it. It pretty much has everything you want in a slasher flick.
-Cute naughty girls to kill.
-Seclusion.
-Dumb cops.
-A drunk vagrant type to warn them.
-Nice villians.
-A heroine.
-An open end for more sequels.

[my rating]
I give this movie 2.5 out of 5 for blood and gore.
3.5 out of 5 for the plot.
3 out of 5 for characters.
3 out of 5 overall.
